JoyceDeWitt started her stage show at age 13. DeWitt graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. The director encouraged her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. She was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship along with the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While attending UCLA, she worked as a secretary before making her TV debut in the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to rumors that she was mentored by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has claimed that they have never met. DeWitt's character as Janet Wood in Three's Company's run from 1977 to 1984 is her most well-known. She was part of the pilot episode of the show and later selected. Janet was also featured in an episode of the show The Ropers in 1979. After Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in 1984, then she stopped acting for a number of years. Acting was her first foray back to the stage in June 1991 in which she appeared in an episode of the Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. After that she appeared in the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured an character inspired by her voice, which was performed by another actress in 1997. She appeared in an episode of Cybill and made an appearance on the final episode of Living Single. The 2000s work of her includes TV shows such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
